vCenter Ops Manager – You may own it already

Administration, Performance, VMware News 1 Comment »

I have been doing a number of presentations on vCenter Ops Manager over the past few weeks.  This concern was raised at one of the sessions.  If you were not aware, VMware had a promotion from November 23, 2010 to March 1, 2011.  The promotion was for 50 VMs worth of “Alive VM” (the product now known as vCenter Operations Manager.)  There were a set of VMware SKUs that were applicable for the promotion (unfortunately this was the link for it but it no longer works.)  I believe the SKUs were almost all of the upgrade or new purchases of Standard, Advanced, Ent or Ent+ editions of ESX.  I’m trying to find the list of SKUs but most of the links to detailed information are now broken.  So if you bought the applicable SKUs, you got 50 VMs worth of Ops Manager.

Beginning on March 15, 2011, VMware began sending out the email notifications with the Redemption Codes in email.  The customer contact on the original order for the products should have received the email.  It has instructions for redeeming the code and getting the Ops Manager licenses.  If you have not received (or can’t find) the email and believe you are eligible, you should contact your VMware Sales team.  Here’s the main point: If you have received your email, you only have until May 31, 2011 to redeem your code and get your licenses.

If you think you are eligible, make sure to find your email and get your licenses, time is running out.

Release: VMware vCloud Connector 1.0

Software Releases, VMware News Comments Off

This is an important release as it allows customers to migrate their VMs or vApps from the private to the public clouds.  You can go straight to the downloads section here.  You’ll find some interesting features in the release notes:

VMware vCloud Connector (vCC) allows the vSphere Administrators to use their familiar vSphere Client as a singlepane-of-glass view across hybrid clouds and perform the following operations:

  • See a list of virtual machines, vApps, or VM templates on vSphere and vCloud Director-based private and public clouds.
  • Copy virtual machines, vApps, or VM templates between vSphere and vCloud Director-based private and public clouds.
  • Perform basic operations (for example, power on/off, suspend, reset, delete) on virtual machines and
vApps in vSphere and vCloud Director-based private and public clouds.
  • Deploy vApp templates as vApps (fenced mode) in vCloud Director-based private and public clouds.
  • Access vCloud vApp consoles on specific update releases of vSphere Client 4.0 and 4.1.

Release: VMware View 4.6

Desktop Virtualization, Software Releases, VMware News 2 Comments »

Some nice new items in this one.  If you like, you can proceed straight to the download here.  Here’s the what’s new section from the release notes:

VMware View 4.6 includes the following new features:

  • Security servers can now accommodate PCoIP connections – Security servers now include a PCoIP Secure Gateway component. The PCoIP Secure Gateway connection offers the following advantages:
    • The only remote desktop traffic that can enter the corporate data center is traffic on behalf of a strongly authenticated user.
    • Users can access only the desktop resources that they are authorized to access.
    • No VPN is required, as long as PCoIP is not blocked by any networking component.
    • Security servers with PCoIP support run on Windows Server 2008 R2 and take full advantage of the 64-bit architecture.
  • Enhanced USB device compatibility - View 4.6 supports USB redirection for syncing and managing iPhones and iPads with View desktops. This release also includes improvements for using USB scanners, and adds to the list of USB printers that you can use with thin clients. For more information, see the list of View Client resolved issues.
  • Keyboard mapping improvements - Many keyboard-related issues have been fixed. For more information, see the list of View Client resolved issues.
  • New timeout setting for SSO users - With the single-sign-on (SSO) feature, after users authenticate to View Connection Server, they are automatically logged in to their View desktop operating systems. This new timeout setting allows administrators to limit the number of minutes that the SSO feature is valid for.

For example, if an administrator sets the time limit to 10 minutes, then 10 minutes after the user authenticates to View Connection Server, the automatic login ability expires. If the user then walks away from the desktop and it becomes inactive, when the user returns, the user is prompted for login credentials. For more information, see the VMware View Administration documentation.

  • VMware View 4.6 includes more than 160 bug fixes – For descriptions of selected resolved issues, see Resolved Issues.
  • Experimental support for Microsoft Windows 7 SP1 RC operating systems
