New Poll: How do you like your vCenter? On iron or in a VM?

Just for Fun Add comments

Posted a new poll this past weekend.  I see some have already started responding.  I know a few blogs have run this one in the past but I’m curious with my SMB focus to see if the results vary.  Please take a quick sec and post a vote.  I’m closing the poll on March 7th (an extra week because I started it late).

Just as a FYI, I run mine in a VM.

VM for sure unless it’s a VMware View deployment.

  2. Tom Says:

In a VM on VMware Server, since we have a very small deployment, but someday I may move it to one of the ESX hosts.

Don’t forget, you can always P2V it later if you like.

  4. Virtual Nerd Says:

    Virtual machine every time.

I have lots of discussions around keeping VC “out of band” but it just doesn’t make sense to me.

Using HA I’ve got the ability to recover very quickly and now we’re talking about vCenter heatbeat it’s even more compelling.

I’m a bit confused by those who don’t run vCenter in a VM !!!
It’s totally contradictory with virtualization spirit and proves that still many IT admins are anchored to a the ‘old’ world of 1 to 1 rule, 1 app/1 server…
Or maybe they don’t feel comfortable with their virtual environment !?

The main argument I’ve heard against running vCenter as a VM is that you’re managing and relying on the environment from within the environment that it is managing. I think this does people’s heads in. Personally I run it on a VM on a DRS cluster that it manages as you can leverage all of the HA functions that provides.

Tom said above he runs it on VMware Server; this is a great compromise as it is running on disparate infrastructure but you can still leverage the inherent advantages of virtualisation. Snapshotting just makes upgrades and patches that much easier!

Just P2V’d VC and starting to like it. I’m curious about Harley’s comment about View. We are just getting ready to bring a View cluster online – so what if VC is on a VM? In my case, I’m thinking VC is more resilient b/c it runs on a cluster.

  8. Jerry Wilkin Says:

I also run mine in a VM in a DRS/HA cluster.
