Every once in a while, during a presentation, a customer will come up with a use-case for one of our products that I had not considered before. I was presenting VMware View to a group of customers and I was reviewing the new capabilities of View Manager called Unified Access. UA allows the clients to have the option of connecting to Virtual Machines with View Manager and also allows connecting to Terminal Servers or Physical PC’s for destinations as well. As you may know, I work in central Ohio where we get about 25 inches of snow a year (a tiny amount compared to some). This particular customer mentioned how great this would work for their environment. Having a method for his users to connect to physic PC’s would help him right now, he said. His idea was to load the View agent on each of the physical PCs in their environment. If a worker cannot drive in to the office, they could simply open a web browser on their home PC and with View, they can have a SSL connection to their desktop running at their desk to do everything they needed. He went on to suggest that when that PC reaches end of life, convert (P2V) the desktop OS (assuming licensing requirements are met) and reload that PC with a thin client emulator (like Thinlaunch ) to extend the life of the PC a little longer until budgets will allow for a thin client for the user.
It’s always fun to have a customer teach you better ways to use your software. I have to admit, I love to listen to their ideas. Keep them coming, and I’ll keep writing them down.
